The green and rolling countryside of Worcestershire, England, is home to the cider apple orchards which surround the gardens of Pear Tree Cottage. They enjoy a sunny south westerly aspect with sweeping views across to Martley Hillside, Woodbury and Abberley clock tower. The Teme Valley lies just over the hill and, not far away, is the Herefordshire border. Although our climate is temperate, our seasons are often uncertain and always a challenge to a gardener! This began in 2010 & follows the weekly ups and downs of garden work chronicling both successes and failures but, above all, demonstrates the fun enjoyed by three people who regularly garden in all weathers

Better Late than Never!

Work has continued a pace at PTC but the weather has not been cooperative and persistently heavy and late frosts have meant that potato planting and vegetable seed sowing is much later than usual. Good Friday was the day when I managed to get in 4 rows of potatoes, a row of peas and another of broad beans - a whole 15 days later than last year when I did it all on 1st April.  Having said that, we had a two week spell of very cold and wet weather last year and not much likes sitting in cold and wet soil!

I really have to ration our vegetable selection as the plot isn't very big so I go for the ones we eat and enjoy the most!  I'm also keeping room for a row of Helichrysum flowers which I plan to sneak in somewhere!!
